Course description: a modular course focussing on ten key themes of best practice in dementia care with additional signposting to best practice resources. The course comprises 15 hours of teaching, exercises and reflection sessions that can be flexibly organised into sessions of 45-60 minutes and timetabled to suit learner needs and availability. Modules are built sequentially each building on the learning from the preceding module.
Participants: all managers and staff working with and supporting people experiencing dementia
Course Content: The 10 Modular Themes:
1. Understanding dementia and the experience of dementia for the individual
2. Getting to know and understanding the person with dementia
3. Making sense of behaviour we find difficult in people with dementia
4. An empathetic attitude and therapeutic conversations with people with dementia
5. Integrating activity and occupation into the living experience of residents
6. The social community and activities for people with dementia
7. Enhancing a sense of security and wellbeing through environmental design and resources
8. Support and information for relatives/ visitors
9. Creating the right culture and building relationships between and among relatives, residents and staff
10. Integrating the resident’s perspective with socio clinical perspectives for person centred care
360 Forward courses and the Qualifications and Credit Framework (QCF): a perfect fit. Intermediate courses are designed to be responsive to employers and individual staff needs. In line with the QCF each course contains learning outcomes and assessment criteria.
